April Circle Lab: Collective Wisdom and Collective Folly

  • Open Circle United States (map)

If you spend time in a forest, something becomes clear quickly:
nothing survives alone.

What appears to be a collection of individual trees is actually an ongoing conversation—roots intertwined underground, fungi trading nutrients, insects pollinating, birds carrying seeds. Life speaking to life.

The strength of the forest comes not from uniformity, but from diversity and relationship.

Human systems, however, often move in the opposite direction.

In our organizations, institutions, and communities we tend to favor certain voices and capacities over others—speed over reflection, confidence over doubt, decisiveness over curiosity. Some perspectives become amplified while others quietly disappear.

Over time, the system becomes less resilient.

This Circle Lab invites us to explore the delicate balance between collective wisdom and collective folly—how groups can become wiser than any individual, and how they can also organize themselves in ways that silence what matters most.

Together, we’ll explore:

  • How diverse perspectives strengthen the resilience and creativity of human systems

  • Why groups sometimes ignore important signals even when the information is present

  • How hierarchy, urgency, and cultural norms can unintentionally silence wisdom

  • What conditions allow difference, uncertainty, and intuition to enter the room

This is not a space to debate or solve.

It’s a space to notice—how our systems listen, what they filter out, and what becomes possible when more voices are allowed into the conversation.

As always, Circle Lab is a place to slow down enough to hear the signals that often go unnoticed—so that collective intelligence can emerge before collective folly takes hold.

What Is Circle Lab?

Circle Lab is a monthly space to pause, reflect, and connect with peers navigating complexity, change, and impact in their organizations and communities. Each session explores a shared inquiry related to leadership, collaboration, and human systems—through dialogue, reflection, and collective sensemaking.

At Open Circle, we believe meaningful change begins not with rushing to act, but with learning how to listen—together.
